The Theory of Poker
David Sklansky - 1987

Rating: 4 (Very Good)

Theory of Poker is David Sklansky at his best. This book contains all the logic and mathematics behind making poker decisions. It hits on all the major concepts and tactics, and explains why they work. The book is very general, in that it is not specific to any one type of poker (examples of Hold'em, Stud, Razz, High/Low, etc.). Also, its advice is not specific play recommendations, but a basis for reasoning through all poker decisions.

David Sklansky presents his "Fundamental Theorem of Poker", where the main objective is to force your opponents to make mistakes. This is how you win at poker. He also provides the best explination of pot odds, implied odds, and effective odds I’ve ever read. This is a must-read book for anyone who considers them self a serious poker player. While this book alone won't make you a winning player, the ideas presented here build a solid foundation for your poker understanding and will help when reading other, more specific strategy advice.
