Championship No-Limit & Pot-Limit Hold'em
T.J. Cloutier & Tom McEvoy - 1997

Rating: 2 (Poor)

I've heard from some people that this is the best no-limit book there is, but I wasn't too impressed with it. T.J. Cloutier does most of the writing in this book. In fact, the only time I heard about Tom McEvoy is when T.J. mentioned how Tom would play a situation differently. It seems that in most of the situations he describes, he talks about how you have to "feel" your opponent or use your instincts. This might be fine for someone with T.J.'s natural people-reading skills, but it does little to help me. Then he will recommend several different plays for each situation, saying, "Sometimes I'll play it like this. Other times..." There is some good advice scattered throughout the book, but I think it is impossible for T.J. to teach the type of poker instincts that he has been gifted with.

On a good note, there is a section in the back of the book containing a bunch of T.J.'s old poker war stories. These make some great reading. T.J. tells stories from the good ole' days when he was playing on the road throughout Texas and Louisiana, and all the characters he met along the way. The book is worth getting, just for this last section alone.
