Online Tournaments Structures

As you know, poker tournaments must force the action by increasing the blinds/antes at periodic intervals. This is how they get to a winner in a timely manner. Without raising blinds, tournaments could last for weeks or months before finishing.

The rate at which the blinds increase strongly affects the style of the tournament. The slower the blinds raise, the more time there is for the cards to even out and good play to prevail. If the blinds raise too fast, luck will play a bigger factor, and it will end up being more of a crap shoot.

I often hear people saying stuff like, “I don’t like this tournament, the blinds go up too fast.”, or “The tournament structure at this site sucks.”, etc. So I decided to put together a good comparison of the tournament structures for the major online poker sites. Below is a graphical representation of how fast the blinds increase for each site. You can use these charts to help decide which site is best for you to play tournaments at.

Sit-n-Go Tournaments

  • Royal Vegas by far has the worst structure. Their blinds double every round.
  • Ultimate Bet and Pacific have the best structures.
  • All results are using $20 buy-in, No-Limit Hold'em, full table Sit-n-Go's.
  • Some sites used timed rounds (instead of number of hands). Assumption of 10 hands in 10 minutes was used.
  • Pacific is the only site that uses a level length of 15 hands.
  • Full Tilt uses very fast rounds (5 minutes), but the blinds go up in smaller increments.

Multi-Table Tournaments

  • Royal Vegas and Paradise have the worst structure.
  • Ultimate Bet, with it's $2500 starting chips, by far has the slowest (best) blinds structure.
  • All results are using $100 buy-in, no-limit hold'em, full table tournaments. These are all regular speed tournaments (not "Turbo").
  • Poker Stars, Paradise Poker, Ultimate Bet, and Full Tilt start adding antes in the later stages. This cause a steeper increase towards the end of the tournament.
  • When antes are added, I added 8 antes to the size of the blinds, to approximate the total amount paid per round.
