Super System
Doyle Brunson - 1979

Rating: 2 (Poor)

This book is known as the poker bible. When it was published it was more advanced and more compressive than any other poker strategy advice previously released. There was even worry by the top players that this book would ruin their profit, by educating the average poker players. Doyle Brunson put together a team of the top poker pro's of the time, to each write a section about their area of specialty. Mike Caro – 5 Card Draw, David “Chip” Reese – 7 Card Stud, Joey Hawthorne – Low Ball, David Sklansky – High-Low Split, Bobby Baldwin – Limit Hold’em, Doyle Brunson – No Limit Hold’em

My review of this book can only cover the No-Limit Hold'em section (written by Doyle Brunson), because that's the only portion of the book I've read. While this book might have been groundbreaking when it came out, I don't think it has near the value today. A lot of the situations were out of date (different blind and game structures and different type of opponents). His advice, at times, seemed to be based more on feel than research. For example, he admits to believing in "rushes" of good cards, and advocates coming in for a preflop raise, regardless of the cards, after winning the previous pot. His advice also seems overly loose/aggressive for my tastes. He states that he is willing to often put in all his money on a hand he is sure is not the best hand, because of the chance of the other guy folding plus the chance of sucking out a win for a huge pot. This type of advice definitely does not apply to tournaments.

There is a new 21st century version of Super System. I would hope that the new version corrects most of the out-of-date issues and updates some of the advice. I'm not trying to discourage anyone from reading this monumental book, but just be sure to take its advice with a grain of logic.
