Small Stakes Hold'em
Ed Miller, David Sklansky, & Mason Malmuth - 2004

Rating: 3 (Good)

This is a dangerous book. It is dangerous in two ways. First, it can be dangerous for your opponents, if you can master the advice in this book. Secondly, for a beginning poker player, this book can be dangerous to his own bankroll. What I just said is probably pretty controversial, because there are plenty of people who swear by this book.

The name "Small Stakes" is a misleading title. Even though its advice is specific to loose/passive limit games (like you would find at most small stakes tables), this book is not intended for beginners. It's actually quite advanced. The reason I say this book can be dangerous to your own bankroll is that it's easy to misuse the advice and and become too loose and play too many hands too far. I think it's best to first get a good solid understanding of "ABC" poker, before you try to tackle these advanced concepts.

The style of play in this book is very aggressive, which will maximize your profits, but at the cost of higher variance. For beginners, lower variance is sometimes more important than maximizing profit. That's why I recommend beginners stick with a more conservative strategy, until they are proven winners for a decent period of time. Then, when they're ready to step up their game, read this book (over and over).
